Occupy Hanukkah?

I reported today the city declined the donation of a menorah for the City Hall atrium, where there is a gigantic Christmas tree. The city says it doesn’t want any religious symbols at City Hall. The city considers a menorah religious and a Christmas tree secular.

The city does allow a large menorah at Washington Square Park, owned and maintained by Chabad Lubavitch. The menorah donor says the city has set up a “designated menorah zone.”

The Washington Square Park menorah is very close to the Occupy Rochester tent village. Certainly, this is a much different backdrop for the annual Hanukkah celebration.

Wow, that seems like a pretty clear double-standard.
